All Florescent lights contain Mercury. There is enough Mercury to pose a serious health risk in the event of a CLF breakage. People are being told to run out of the building for 15 minutes, open windows and turn off the heat. Additionally the bulbs do not last as long as advertised and they take a long time to warm up, decreasing in brightness over time. The light they emit is not a full spectrum steady light. Few Bulbs actually get recycled and they need to be treated as hazardous materials when discarding them. Consumers be alerted!

Greece Said to Have Arranged Swaps With 15 Banks

Feb. 22 (Bloomberg) — Greece arranged swap agreements with about 15 securities firms, including some payments from banks that may have helped hide the country’s true deficit, according to a person with direct knowledge of the contracts.

The swaps that allowed Greece to receive payments upfront date from before 2008, when European Union regulators changed rules to limit the use of the contracts, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Goldman Sachs Group Inc., which provided Greece with about $1 billion in funding in a 2002 swap, may have arranged the biggest of the contracts, the person said.

The EU accounting watchdog ordered Greece last week to provide information on its swaps as it probes whether the country used derivatives to hide the extent of its budget deficit, and if other countries used them. Swaps are typically designed to help countries to manage their debt rather than generate cash, according to Cesare Conti, a business professor at Italy’s Bocconi University.

“Upfront payments don’t necessarily lead to hidden debt,” Conti said in a telephone interview from Milan. “If swaps are used to manage obligations, rather than increase them, they’re beneficial.”

Concern about Greece’s ability to finance its deficit and debt have roiled financial markets since the government revealed the country had a budget shortfall of 12.7 percent last year, more than four times limit allowed for those countries using the euro, and the highest ratio in the 27-nation European Union.

Primary Dealers

The spread, the premium investors demand to hold Greek 10-year notes instead of German bunds, Europe’s benchmark government securities, reached 396 basis points last month, the most since the year before the euro’s debut in 1999. That compared with an average of 57 basis points in the past decade. A basis point is 0.01 percentage point.

The 15 banks that have swap agreements with Greece are among the country’s so-called primary dealers, said the person. Greece had 21 dealers last year, including Citigroup Inc., Barclays Plc and Morgan Stanley, according to the country’s central bank.

Spokesmen for Goldman Sachs in New York and Morgan Stanley in London declined to comment. Officials at Barclays and Citigroup in London didn’t have an immediate comment.

“Governments seek a large number of swap counterparties to reduce the exposure to any one bank,” Conti said.

An official for the Greek government didn’t have an immediate comment. The swaps used by Greece were “at the time legal,” Greek Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou said on Feb. 15. The government doesn’t use the swaps now, he said.

Government Inquiry

A Greek government inquiry uncovered this month a series of swaps agreements that have allowed the government to defer interest payments to a later date, causing “long-term damage” to the country. Greece’s central government debt totaled 298.5 billion euros ($406.8 billion) at the end of 2009, according to the Finance Ministry.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Feb. 18 it would be a “scandal” if banks helped Greece massage its budget. French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde, speaking on France Inter radio the same day, said that even if the swaps were legal, they probably contributed to instability.

Greek government bonds tumbled last week amid concern the country may not deliver measures to trim its budget deficit, and as the EU promised assistance without specifying what form it would take. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Greek government bonds rose 32 basis points to 6.46 percent last week.

Being in touch with your feelings will make you a better person as well as a better parent and partner. Being true to your emotions can’t help but make you feel better about yourself, for you’re able to be authentic.

When we choose to bury our feelings, we act differently. We may not make ourselves available to others  may withdraw, or just not be fully engaged when we do spend time with other people. At other times, we can react inappropriately because our emotions are pulling us in a different direction from where we really want or need to go. When you express how you really feel (in an appropriate manner), problems get solved, relationship issues get resolved, and life is easier. In addition, you will like your life better because you’re not holding on to unhealed or confusing feelings.

Sometimes you have to hold back speaking your truth because the situation requires that you do so. For example, if there are other people (especially children) in the room, or you’re coming from a place of anger, check to make sure you’re speaking in a tone that won’t offend or upset those around you. The purpose of expressing your emotions is to convey your true feelings, and to be open and honest, not to embarrass or blast another human being.

Other times we need to express our pain and sadness, and many people are afraid to do so because they fear that once they get started, they may not be able to stop. This is a common misconception, for depressing thoughts can distort your thinking, and it’s hard to perceive the world correctly during those times. The truth is that by letting the tears flow, you are letting out what hurts while making more room in your heart for positive thoughts and feelings. Expressing your pain is actually a good way to make it stop.

Most of us are far better at talking about what we don’t like than about what we enjoy or what touches us deeply. Take the time to tell someone who has made your life a little better that they have done so, and you will also feel better for having said it. Do your best to spend at least as much energy expressing your positive feelings as you do the negative ones. Once you create an emotional balance, your life will start to make more sense.

Ultimately, we all want to experience and share the good stuff more than the toxic energies that protrude throughout our days, but it can take a little while to develop the habit. It’s not as much about practicing as it is about how you come across and what it feels like when you say what’s truly going on inside your head.

When you open your mouth, you are also opening your heart, and knowing that someone truly hears what you are feeling and understands you is soothing to your soul.

Israeli soldiers blindfold and arrest young boy in Hebron

A two-minute video uploaded to YouTube yesterday by the International Solidarity Movement shows a blindfolded Palestinian boy being led away by two heavily-armed Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron that same day.

Israeli soldiers demand to see the passports of internationals observing the arrest of the child. The soldiers tear the passports from the internationals’ hands and soon they are flanked by persons who appear to be Jewish settlers.

Human rights volunteers say the boy, 14, was arrested by Israeli soldiers at his home. (Source)

“Go today!” a soldier repeatedly shouts at the woman holding the video camera. A man, presumably a settler, approaches and the woman asks the soldier, “Who is this man?” The man answers in English with a North American accent, “Who are you? I live here.”

Another man in civilian clothes carrying a large gun approaches the woman in an aggressive manner. Soon more settlers come to the scene, as if they were backing up the Israeli army.

An email from Christian Peacemaker Teams sent to The Electronic Intifada today says that the boy shown blindfolded in the video is fourteen years old and was arrested at his home.

The email adds that after the home arrest:

The soldiers then walked him, still blindfolded and handcuffed, to another checkpoint a block away and shut him into that checkpoint box. After about 15 minutes they walked him to an Israeli Army Base. Internationals who tried to follow were stopped by soldiers who called them “nazi pigs.” Several adult armed settlers were also present and were aggressive and threatening.

After another 15 minutes soldiers put the boy in a military jeep and drove him to checkpoint 56, and released him to Palestinian officials on the other side.

Last week Christian Peacemaker Teams released a report titled “Occupied Childhoods: Impact of the actions of Israeli soldiers on Palestinian children in H2 (Occupied Hebron) during February, March and April 2013,” focusing on the violations of rights of Palestinian children in Hebron.

“Human rights workers in H2, the portion of the city under Israeli military control, have witnessed 47 detentions or arrests of children age 15 and under by soldiers since the start of February,” according to Christian Peacemaker Teams.

“Other violations documented in the report include conducting war training when children are present, delaying children and teachers as they pass checkpoints to access schools, detaining children in adult facilities, questioning children without the presence of an adult, and blindfolding children in detention.”

Israeli forces arrested 27 children outside an Hebron elementary school during a single incident last month, according to the group.

Hackers Find Open Back Door to Power Grid With Renewables

Making the electricity grid greener is boosting its vulnerability to computer hacking, increasing the risk that spies or criminals can cause blackouts.

Adding wind farms, solar panels and smart meters to the power distribution system opens additional portals through which hackers can attack the grid, according to computer security experts advising governments and utilities. Where traditionally the grid took power from a few sources, it’s now absorbing it from thousands.

The communication networks and software that link green energy sources to the grid as well as the electronic meters that send real time power usage to consumers and utilities are providing new back-door entry paths for computer hackers to raise havoc with the grid. The disclosure this week that hackers known as “Dragonfly” and “Energetic Bear” gained access to power networks across the U.S. and Europe in the past 15 months is a reminder of how vulnerable the system has become.

“Attacks against the grid have moved from theory to reality,” said Raj Samani, chief technology officer for Europe, Middle East and Africa, at McAfee Inc., a unit of Intel Corp. (INTC) that’s one of the biggest security software providers.

Utilities, already grappling with other challenges to the grid, may spend what may run into the billions of dollars for computer security. A new multitude of energy inputs is forcing grid managers to run systems that communicate real-time data on power flows to consumers and power plants, bringing networks that were previously closely controlled into contact with computer and telecommunication systems used by millions.

‘Documented Attacks’“There have been documented attacks, both cyber and physical on the electric grid which resulted in equipment damage, service disruption and long term repair,” said Sean McGurk, global manager for critical infrastructure protection at Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ), the largest U.S. wireless carrier.

In the U.S., President Barack Obama signed an executive order in February calling for work to assess which parts of the grid are most at risk. Many utilities aren’t waiting for the government’s findings. Dominion Resources Inc. (D), owner of Virginia’s largest electric company, told investors in February it will spend $500 million over five years to harden critical substations. American Electric Power Co. (AEP)’s Ohio utility has asked regulators to grant the right to levy a special charge for cyber security.

“We cannot predict potential costs,” said Melissa McHenry, a spokeswoman for the company, based in Columbus, Ohio.

Millions BudgetedAbout a third of the 61 power and utility companies surveyed by Ernst & Young LLP said they’re spending more than $3 million a year — at least $183 million in total — on information security including protection from cyber threats.

Utility chief executive officers began meeting last year with senior Homeland Security officials on ways to detect attacks, block them, and prepare to restore power quickly when one succeeds, said Scott Aaronson, senior director for national security policy at the Edison Electric Institute, a utility trade group based in Washington.

“In the past 18 months, we’ve done more to improve situational awareness that we had in the previous five years,” Aaronson said.

In Europe, the story is much the same. Consulting and testing services associated with cybersecurity at utilities there will more than double to 412 million euros ($564 million) a year by 2016, according to International Data Corp. (IDC), a market researcher based in Framingham, Massachusetts.

Smart MetersAlready, the energy industry was the sixth-most targeted sector worldwide last year. It was the top target in the U.S., accounting for 59 percent of the 256 attacks recorded last year by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Almost all the specifics of the incidents are kept quiet to prevent damage to the companies victimized.

In the past, all power use was measured by mechanical meters, which required a utility worker to inspect and read them. Now, utilities are turning to smart meters that communicate data on flows minute by minute both to customers and utilities. In Britain, the government wants most homes to have smart meters by 2020, opening millions of new access points for attackers. Similar programs are in place across the U.S. and Europe.

“Anytime you introduce more software, you introduce more complexity and inevitably more potential holes to the system,” said Gavin O’Gorman, a threat intelligence analyst at Symantec Corp. (SYMC), the security company based in Mountain View, California, that identified the “Dragonfly” threat.

Rogue ProgrammerEnergy companies are only starting to understand the vulnerabilities that smart meters bring, said Nick Hunn, chief technology officer at WiFore, a U.K.-based wireless technology consultant.

Every meter being deployed in the U.K. has a “relay” that can disconnect a household from the power supply. This is controlled by the utility from a computer keyboard. Since the same code goes into all meters, it would take just one small piece of code inserted by a rogue programmer to disconnect the power from millions of meters and disable the remote connection to the utility, Hunn said.

“If you talk to the utilities about what you have to protect against, it’s about transformers shorting out and trees falling on lines,” Hunn said. “That’s what they’ve been dealing with for the past 100 years.”

‘Dragonfly’ IncidentIn the “Dragonfly” incident, hackers thought to be in Eastern Europe started targeting power companies with spam in February 2013 and gained access to networks at three companies a few months later. Symantec didn’t name the companies. It said most of the incidents were in Spain, the U.S., France and Italy.

Renewable energy companies were targeted. The “Dragonfly” hackers used a French website of a clean power provider as a “watering hole,” where victims from the targeted company visit and pick up infected code, Symantec said.

They were able to compromise industrial control systems and install malware that can replicate itself and spread to other computers.

“Dragonfly” was the latest in a series of breaches affecting energy companies. In June, the U.S. traced dozens of surveillance sorties in 2012 and 2013 on gas pipelines and electric utilities to the People’s Liberation Army in China.

Teenage Breach“There’s a reluctance to talk about attacks because no one wants to disclose their vulnerabilities,” said Sameer Patil, associate fellow of Gateway House, a researcher in Mumbai specialized in terrorism and national security. It has seen attacks from Chinese and Pakistani hackers against Indian utilities.

In one of the very few cases that reached the public, a 17-year-old in the Netherlands was arrested in March 2012 in Barendrecht for breaching hundreds of servers maintained by KPN NV (KPN), a telecommunications company providing smart-meter services to utilities.

“The amount of renewables being integrated into the grid is challenging reliability because there are more information and computer technology components being introduced in the grid,” said Maurice Adriaensen, a consultant for DNV GL who is co-chairman of a pan-European group advising on smart meters. “The amount of cyber vulnerabilities is increasing.”

Peter Terium, chairman of the management board of RWE AG (RWE), Germany’s second-largest power company said even the most secure and well tested networks are not entirely impregnable. ‘‘Nothing is un-hackable,’’ he said.

All the important ethical issues dealing with the most special aspects of being a free human being living a full human life are completely dismissed. The praise of the machine in these discourses dealing with not only transhumanism ideals but also neuroscience today has a cost and that is complete disrespect, despise and underestimation of human beings, at least when it comes to their bodies, abilities and biological functions. The brain is though seen as the only valuable thing; not just because of its complexity and mysteries, but also because it can create consciousness and awareness. We’re prone to diseases, we die, we make irrational decisions, we’re inconsistent, and we need someone to look up to. In a radio interview on Swedish “Filosofiska rummet” entitled “Me and my new brain” (Jag och min nya hjärna), neuroscientist Martin Ingvar referred to the human body as a “bad frame for the brain”. Questions about individual free will and personal identity were discussed and the point of view of Martin Ingvar was very much in line with José Delgado’s some 60 years ago, and its buried history of mind control: we don’t really have any choice, we’re not really having a free will or for that matter any consistent personality. This would be enough reason to change humans to whatever someone else wishes. For example, an elite.

Another reason for why this issue dealing with brain implants is important of course is the fact that both the US and the EU pour billions of dollars and euros in brain research every single year, a brain research very focused on not only understanding the brain, but also highly focused on merging human beings with machines; using neuro-implants to correct behavior and enhance intelligence; creating robots and other machines that think and make autonomous intelligent decisions — just like humans do.

Ray Kurzweil, who’s predictions about future technological developments have been correct at least until now, claims that in 20 years, implant-technology has advanced that far that humanity has been completely transformed by it. We cannot know right now whether he’s prediction is right or wrong, but we have the right to decide on the kind of future we want. I do not know if eradicating humanity as we know it is the best future or the only alternative. Today, we might still have a choice.
